A West Virginia man underwent kidney stone removal, during which a stone basket extractor snapped at the distal end, leaving both the basket and the stone inside the kidney. A medQuest biomedical engineer tested the remainder of the extractor and reported that it had failed prematurely, indicating potential liability on the part of its manufacturer.
