Ref. # 53958
A Pennsylvania woman underwent a 7-8 hour laparoscopic pelvic/abdominal surgery and subsequently developed right brachial plexus compression and reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) of all four extremities. The patient was in the Trendelenberg position, with shoulder braces applied, for the entire surgery. A medQuest OB/GYN reported that keeping the patient in this position for such a duration constituted gross negligence. OB anesthesiologists are taught this operating principle but many OB/GYNĄ
s are not, indicating equally shared liability in this matter. A medQuest OB anesthesiologist independently concurred with this opinion.
